Who Is Pope Leo XIV?

Born in Chicago in 1955, Robert Prevost is a member of the Order of Saint Augustine and holds dual U.S.-Peruvian citizenship. He spent significant time in Peru, serving as Archbishop of Chiclayo and working closely with marginalized communities. Fluent in English, Spanish, and Italian, he has been recognized for his commitment to social justice and human rights .

Prior to his election, Prevost served as the Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops, a key Vatican role responsible for appointing bishops worldwide. His experience and alignment with the inclusive and synodal approach of Pope Francis made him a consensus candidate among the cardinals .

Significance of His Election

Pope Leo XIV’s election is notable not only because he is the first American pope but also the first from the Augustinian order.
